When left to their own devices…
Miriam was asking to go outside all day long because we finally had snow on the ground. She likes to eat it. So when Simon got back from school I sent the two of them out to play. Moments later the inevitable “Mom! Mooooommmm!” I look out the window to see Simon on the hood of the car. “Look Mom! I figured out my way up!” Of course (thinking of what Aaron would say) I told him “I’m very impressed you figured that out, but the car is not a toy, you need to get down.” He started to slide down the front on his bum, but freaked out when he feet couldn’t touch anything.
And so started our battle of the wills.
Me “No, you figured your way up, you figure your way down”
Simon ” Mooommm, I can’t!”
Me “Yes, you can. I am not coming out there.”
Simon “Mooooommmmm!”
Me “Turn over and slide on your tummy”
Simon “No! I can’t, Mom come here”
Me “Nope, you can do it”
Then I shut the door and went for the camera. I was thinking that this would be enough to keep him from climbing up again. Tough love, teach him the lesson.
Two minutes later an ecstatic Simon runs to the door. “I did it Mom! I did it! I figured out the way all by myself! Come watch, I’ll do it again for you to see!” He was so proud of himself, and I liked the ending better that way too.
