Pigtails?

Miriam’s hair is finally long enough for pigtails! Simon asked me why are they called pigtails. I told him maybe because they are short and curly like pigs tails? I don’t really know – it’s just one of those weird things we say all the time. I looked it up online and apparently I’m using the wrong terminology – pigtails is supposed to refer to braids. So then what have I done to my daughter’s hair?
